Radeon 9600 i brak działania gnome po aktualizacji

Witam!
Po rekomendacji kolegi zrobiłem aktualizację na drugiej maszynie z Etch do Lenny/Sid, gdyż na laptopie sprawdza się doskonale - problem w tym że podczas aktualizacji GNOME został usunięty. Przywróciłem go przez
apt-get gnome
jednak po restarcie dalej nie miałem okazji doznać interfejsu graficznego. Tak więc poszukałem tu i tam i natknąłem się na to, że nie ma sterowników. Karta graficzna to ATI Radeon 9600 więc zainstalowałem sterowniki zgodnie z instrukcją z repozytoriów z przyklejonego tematu. Dalej nic. Tak więc zrobiłem:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Niestety zapytał mnie TYLKO o klawiaturę i zakończył kreator.
Na końcu w logu mam:
Według Google sugeruje to że nie skonfigurowałem karty grafiki.
Mój xorg.conf wygląda następująco:

Spróbuj według tego sposobu.
X.org wygląda podobnie do mojego starego (bardzo okrojony).

Niestety bez zmian. Nie otrzymuję nowego Xorga w /root. Jest opisana alternatywna metoda dla NVidii - jest takie coś dla ATI?

Użyłem configa z TEGO tematu i otrzymałem ciekawy output że moduł ati nie jest zainstalowany. Wpisałem Driver "fglrx" i chodzi!
